Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man
Songwriter. Poet. Counter-culture icon. Consummate ladies' man.
Since bursting onto the scene in 1967, Leonard Cohen has inspired generations with his unique personality and haunting music, becoming one of the most original and enduring artists to emerge from the 1960s. Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man is an intimate look at the songs, poetry and life of one of music's most celebrated and influential troubadours.
In January, 2005, Lunson traveled to Sydney to film the historic "Came So Far For Beauty" show, a tribute to Leonard Cohen at the Sydney Opera House organized by famed music producer Hal Willner. Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man includes behind-the-scenes interviews and live performances from this event by Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright, Beth Orton, Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson, Jarvis Cocker, The Handsome Family, Julie Christensen and Perla Battala, as well as a special performance of "Tower of Song" by Cohen and U2. And in a series of candid interviews, Cohen himself reveals his trademark wry humor and soulful intensity, using his own artwork, poetry and personal collection of photographs to reflect upon his colorful past and his creative process.

I am an advid fan of Cohen, since the 1960's. This was a true pleasure to watch, although I would have preferred his singing throughout. His lyrics are without the finest and I am a proud canadian that he counts amongst us. It never ceases to amaze me how one person can grow amongst millions and yet stand out as such an individual. This is a wonderful documentary and it makes you appreciate his art so much. Thanks for this rental.Incredible - Pilchards
Leonard Cohen is an incredible man, musician and writer and I am grateful that this film allowed a more mainstream audience (and dare I say, younger?) to gain access to his classic and more recent music.
The first time I watched this film I couldn't finish it because I got so emotional; there is an almost mystical resonance to many of the performances and the bits of documentary-style conversation between songs. It is difficult not to connect with Leonard Cohen and his raw, honest, open and personal approach to life.
In particular, Rufus Wainwright's performance of Hallelujah was amazing, all the more due to the fact that Joan Wasser (of Joan of Policewoman) sang backup (Note: Joan was the lover of Jeff Buckley when he died and I liked the fact that they gave that subtle nod to Jeff and his cover of Hallelujah).
All in all, a stunning tribute that is enjoyable in an of itself, whether or not you are familiar with Leonard Cohen's music. You gotta see this - billie
I give this five stars, not because it's a fabulous movie but because it's a fine tribute to Leonard, a genius, a poet, a bodhisattva, a man of crazy wisdom and great humour. I am a huge Cohen fan and have been for many years, and it's great to see his songs interpreted so well. Particular kudos to Martha Wainwright, Rufus Wainwright and the two women who did There is a Crack in Everything so magnificently.
If you are a Cohen fan, you must see this. If you aren't a fan, you must see this. Whoever you are, Leonard Cohen deserves your attention.
