Love Comes to the Executioner

When death is your job... never love your work.

A recent college graduate (Jonathan Tucker) takes a job as star Executioner at a local prison, where his estranged brother (Jeremy Renner) is slatted to die for murder. But the sibling rivalry really heats up when he finds unconventional love in his brother's ex-girlfriend(Ginnifer Goodwin). Trouble is, she's also on Death Row and slated for execution. With the clock ticking, the sparks fly as this love triangle becomes the ultimate fatal attraction!

Death row comedy - luminol

Although the young man coming home with a college degree in romance languages is obviously bright and intelligent; the guy is totally clueless when it comes to the social world. All of the delight in the film comes from immediately spotting the twists and turns of the story; then waiting for him slowly to conjugate the meanings. He's always two steps behind everyone.

I loved the visual shorthand of this black comedy. During the opening moments of the film it's already been inferred he's heading to prison; even though it takes him a couple of days to exhaust his option before he finally shows up at the gates. Also, there's the clear suggestion that the presence of a penitentiary in town has more to do with putting food on the table and keeping a roof over one's head, than a burning sense of moral rectitude among the populous.

Also, when he opens up his high school memory book, his picture is defaced---a huge clue that, although the story is set in a prison and it tosses around a capital punishment theme; this is actually coming of age pic. This is about Heck Prigusivac (Jonathan Tucker) dealing once and for all with his past and his family before growing up and moving on. Such things, like the propensity for murder seems to have been imprinted into the family DNA.

The names of the characters were a bit of a mouthful; apparently they all have meaning in the Serbian language; Prigusivac means silencer. Also, there are some Latin in-jokes, for those of you who are fluent in Latin. And ... oh yeah ... I love Ginnifer Goodwin!

OK, But Mostly Forgettable. - Jeefster

Small production, cheaply paid actors, cheesy yet unique storyline, and there you have it. A "B" movie with charm and a little humour. Can't find myself writing too much about this one as it certainly didn't leave too much of an impression a few days later.
Rent this if you prefer "Indies" over mainstream, and you have nothing better to do with a coupla hours on a rainy day.
Enough said.
