Sometimes dead is better.

For most families, moving is a new beginning. But for the Creeds, it could be the beginning of the end. Because they've just moved in next door to a place that children built with broken dreams, the Pet Sematary. It's a tiny patch of land that hides a mysterious Indian burial ground with the powers of resurrection. Master Of The Macabre, Stephen King, will take you and the Creeds to hell and back. (But the Creeds don't have return tickets.) Your tour guide is kindly old Jud Crandall (Fred Gwynn), the neighborhood nice guy who knows the secrets of life, but has seen enough to firmly believe that "sometimes dead is better."

Rushed finale only bump in this creepy classic - AVreviews

"Sometimes dead is better." Indeed. The great setup and careful-what-you-wish-for tale story by Stephen King, supporting performances and final scenes make the film work as a whole. However, several moments of "action" close to the end feel rushed and, in some cases, silly looking, which is unfortunate.

Having read the book, nothing can compare to it and the feelings it evokes, but the movie does a great job of bringing it to life. Fred Gwynne (from "Munsters" fame) give a great performance as the well-intentioned Jud Crandall, and Denise Crosby tones down what is essentially a shrill mother character with a performance that seems more real and believable than that of her co-star, Dale Midkiff. The cats are all adorable, and more so Miko Hughes, who plays the little boy.

This "Special Edition" has a leg up on many DVDs, in that there is a nice commentary by director Mary Lambert and a surprisingly informative featurette with interview from the actors and Mr. Stephen King himself about making the film. I love this kind of stuff, so if you do to, it will enlighten your experience.

I don't disagree with those that believe it's overrated, but overall, it's a good thrill with a few iffy moments.

Kind of over-rated - Fudgeflaps

I didn't find this to be a particularly bad movie, but I didn't find it to be particularly good either.
I don't mind horror and fantasy and the like but I think dead kids and pets coming back to life is a little much. It doesn't make for a believable story.
And as it was this one rambled on too much. Just when you think something's going to happen it doesn't. They should have got things rolling right away, and in my opinion that would have made a more watchable movie. It seemed to take so long to really get going that I started to lose interest.

Pet Sematary - immortal

Pets are great because they are always there for you unconditionally. Well, at least if you feed them regularly. They never ask for anything more than the toss of a stick, a clean litter box, or some tender loving care. After watching this movie you will never feel the same about your loving pet.Another great 80's movie.
