The Ten Commandments
"Move over Charlton Heston... the Red Sea parting is back with a brand new look." -Entertainment Tonight
The Ten Commandments
unfolds with all of the spectacle, violent human drama, and grand inspiration that have earned it its distinction as the greatest story ever told.
When an oracle prophesizes that a child will become Prince of Egypt, a time of danger approaches the kingdom. The Egyptian Pharaoh (Paul Rhys,
From Hell
) orders the massacre of all newborn males. But one child, Moses - the son of a Hebrew slave - escapes certain death when he is set adrift on the Nile. As years pass, he is raised in a royal Egyptian house and, with no memory of his family, rises to the stature of prince. Upon discovery of his true heritage and inspired by a fiery message from God, Moses (Dougray Scott,
Mission: Impossible II
) embarks upon a noble and desperate fight to reclaim his destiny as the leader and liberator of the Hebrew people. With a stellar cast that includes Mia Maestro (TV's
Alias
) and Golden Globe® winner Omar Sharif (
Lawrence of Arabia
),
The Ten Commandments
is unsurpassed in its vision - both intimate and grand.

I found this movie up to date with the times of technology and such. It was a very good attempt in imitating accuracy to the Bible. It was realistic and moving. It left me wanting to watch it again. If you really wanted an accurate account then they would have probably needed over a million individuals to portray God's people. wow!

A lot of conjecture about things surrounding Moses' life, particularly as a boy. For instance, they postulate that since Moses was a Prince in Egypt and they think it likely all the Princes would know about "The Egyptian Book of the Dead" - that Moses would also have known about it. So they have invented a scene in a tomb with dead bodies (gore is shown) discussing that grotesque possibility along with their views on the deities the Egyptians worshipped. Or, they postulate that, since the Bible does not say anywhere when Moses came to know he was Hebrew, that maybe it was when he was a child. (It is more likely it was when he was grown, as depicted in the 1956 version.) So they invent a sequence of confrontation where he meets his father, who expresses to Moses his own grave doubts about his faith in God - which frightens Moses and he runs "home" to the Egyptian palace, where he is encouraged to turn his back on his people, the Hebrews, and forget they ever existed. The acting was wooden and reminded me of watching a poorly done nativity school play by amateurs. Though those involved in this project likely saw their efforts as contemporizing the tale, its lack of the ring of truth from all the latitude taken with the underlying documents and the unpolished acting jobs went unappreciated here. It doesn't hold a candle to the efforts by Cecil B. Demille with Charlton Heston as Moses in the 1956 version of The Ten Commandments. It lacks the flavor and reverence of that film as well as the superior acting which makes you believe Charlton Heston's characterization of Moses (zip has it, zip it instead). Perhaps it may have rated half a star higher if there was no comparison to such an outstanding hit classic, but for our entertainment, taking all into account, we thought this title wasn't worth taking the time to see and only rate it a one star.
