Daniel Auteuil (12-time César Award nominee for Best Actor), Emmanuelle Béart and Andre Dussolier star in this sublimely sensual, provocative and critically-acclaimed film. Camille (Béart), a concert violinist, becomes intrigued by her lover's business partner, Stephane, an aloof repairer of fine musical instruments. She interprets his distance as a sign of intellectual seduction, but Stephane is a social voyeur, incapable of emotional intimacy. The love triangle that develops reveals the complexity and imperfection of the three characters and their odd ménage-à-trois relationship.

Austere Emotion, Passionate Music - Stitch

An exquisitely crafted film. Sensitive direction of an interesting premise and the cast, especially André Dussollier, traverse a finely tuned plot line with delicacy. Dialogue is supplemental to the performances but the debates add subtle clues to the core dilemma. But be aware this work will have very finite appeal. A test might be, do you enjoy Ingmar Bergman’s work? If so, hop on board…the route will be familiar and the scenery (Emmanuelle Béart) will melt the most barren Swedish soul.

French films exploring relationships frequently embody a context of personal intimacy, and this is no exception. The settings are in tune with the emotions being examined, from warm coffee shops to restaurants to farm homes …to spartan workshops. The cinematography is crisp and professional. We are given a story without manipulative overtones; the actors are solely charged with the conveyance and the magnificent music lends emphasis. To prepare, Emmanuelle Béart studied violin for a year, and it shows. Her music scenes are unusually credible.

Having said that, as an extraordinarily beautiful women, her developing infatuation with her co-star causes me a little discomfort, especially at the beginning. I just can’t quite buy the chemistry. Daniel Auteuil was and is very much a cinematic heart throb in France but here a much younger version has difficulty convincing me of his irresistibility. In fact, twice I suggested a vague chipmunk likeness. Unkind, I know. And hasten to add that in later roles, particularly comedy, he shines--where the years have added the necessary heft to his persona.

André Dussollier, though, is superb in elegant execution. Béart and Auteuil were nominated for 1993 César for best actor, Dussollier’s was the only award (Best Supporting Actor). Claude Sautet deservedly won a potful for direction.

A relatively slight story line but executed with great finesse. Wonderful score. Highly recommended for contemplative viewing.

Suble, complex, and moving - judith_in_ottawa

I loved this film. It felt much more real than most. It was subtle. I was watching the film, interested, not grabbed by it, and it gradually unfurled itself, with the characters feelings displayed more by how they looked at each other, by their silences and pauses, than by their words.

I'm surprised how much this film engaged me; the feelings the characters were portraying were feelings I've had. And yet it was far from banal. Other films felt like caricatures, in comparison.

Roger Ebert says that characters in French films seem more mature than in American ones, and I think he's right, here at least. These characters are complex, rounded, and deeply interesting.
