Disturbing Movie - Ziegler

Positive: Great movie soundtrack, excellent acting. Realistic filming and storyline. Nice twist at the end. The commentary to this DVD is simply very entertaining and hearing Friedkin talk you get the depth and feel of the movie.

Negative: Well the gay leather bar scene may shock many people. This movie certainly shocked people back in the early 1980s.

Conclusion: One of Friedkin's most underrated films. While this film was one of the low points of Al Pacino's career, it was not because it was a bad movie but the controversy it generated did not better Pacino's career. Anyways one of Friedkin's best but be prepared to be shocked.

A movie like no other - Benson

An interesting movie that deserves to be watched more than once. Police officer Al Pacino goes undercover in New York's gay clubs, to try and find a killer who is targeting gay men. At first he is shocked by the excessive sexuality and drug use in the clubs, but then he becomes conflicted and confused. He feels he is changing and he doesn't know if he can handle.
Overall this is an excellent murder mystery movie that, has a shocking ending which leaves more questions than answers.

A Whodunit and A Snapshot in Time - AJay

I finally watched the entire movie after so many years of wondering what all the attention was about after its release and never quite getting through the entire film. The film is well worth watching for the story though I admit I felt transported back in time.

As a historical record, it has a gritty crime drama feel to it that pre-dates the television police dramas; it paints a picture of a gay scene just as AIDS was about to show itself; and the photography reveals a real life, unbuffed quality that gets lost in so much later film-making.

The DVD included interviews with director and many cast members. The leather scene of the late 1970s was intriguing to the director at the time and now I understand my sense of its 'objectification' when I tried to watch this movie previously. The portrayal is somehow voyeuristic, showing scenes that are dark and seedy, almost mechanical, lacking any of the erotic that I sense is the draw to leather. The director and actors entered the world to capture what they wanted as the background for the main story and I suppose I felt like I'd been through a bit of S&M by their gesture.

Worth watching.
