What happens when a corporation finds a way to enter your dreams and influence your thinking? What happens when a terrorist organization steals the technology? Great Japanese anime that is both lively and colourful. But pay attention or you’ll get lost real fast.

Original, grabbing, cute and scary - luyo

The story grabs you right from the beginning and slowly hypnotizes you with its unusual dreamy visuals and narrative. It has a very original way of bridging different layers of reality - for example when Paprika jumps into a TV set to escape the enemy, ending up in the street that was being shown in the TV newscast playing at that moment. Many other examples will stun you and mess around with your brain. The characters are also likeable, and Paprika you just want to hug her, even the name is cute. The story perhaps requires multiple viewings to understand fully, so intertwined it is with avant garde political messages and nonsensical dialogue, mostly due to the characters bordering between reality, dreaming, and insanity. But in general it is engaging, the themes interesting, the visuals really amazing and incredibly bizarre.

One issue I usually have with anime is the length. With plots that border on confusing, stretching it out for over 2-hours does not help matters much.

Paprika does not have those issues. Running in at a lean 90 minutes, the visuals instantly grab you and by investing a little time the plot is pretty easy to make sense of.

Of course, any movie dealing with dreams can be confusing as each person has their own thoughts on what is happening. With Paprika, you don't need to think too deeply, that will only lead to more confusion. Enjoy the ride and watch how the dream world clashes with reality and all hell breaks loose.

Keep in mind, this is an R Rated movie (how it got an R is beyond me, it should be PG) so it's not for kids.
