Hitchcock received his third Oscar nomination as best director for this fascinating tale of a disturbed amnesiac, which still works very well as both a murder mystery and a romantic melodrama of a woman involved with and trying to emotionally rescue a flawed and broken lover.

The basic story device - an amnesia patient suspected of murder is being helped by a woman to find the truth - is a staple of the mystery genre. Cornell Woolrich's Black Curtain uses a similar story device to great effect. But Hitchcock takes a familiar contrivance and uses it to launch a classic of romantic mood, suspenseful escape and split-second timing. All of the usual Hitchcock visual and suspenseful devices are here: awkward first meetings, precarious perches, slippery slopes and villains with odd secret agendas who seem harmless at first.

Much has been made of Dali's involvement to add surrealistic visuals to the dream sequences, but these are really just window dressing. It's a Hitchcock film. And a very good one.

Melodramatic Hitchcock - SAllende

Spellbound is not the best Alfred Hitchcock film, and I partly blame the Hollywood producer David Selznick.

The story or the concept is very good and interesting - an amnesiac takes the identity of a man who he may or may not have killed.

However, like many of Selznick's films, Spellbound is too melodramatic. There is the incessant soundtrack that is present for almost the entire film, a man and a woman who falls in love after a day of knowing each other, close-ups of over-the-top facial expressions, etc.

Spellbound certainly does not believe in subtlety. The soundtrack will tell you if the moment is suspenseful, romantic, or dramatic. Key moments are hammered into the audience (the key phrase that solves the mystery is repeated over and over again just in case the viewer missed it the first five times it was said).

In summary, this film has an interesting plot but the melodrama detracts from the film.

The dream sequence - by Salvador Dali - is a delight to see however.

Spellbound, is a very good example of hitchcocks early work. The dream sequence by Salvador Dali is really cool and makes the film worth watching on its own. I really enoyed this film. The story moves really well and who could complain about a hitchcock made psychological thriller.
