Quantum of Solace continues the high octane adventures of James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Casino Royale.

On a nonstop quest for justice that crisscrosses the globe, Bond meets the beautiful but feisty Camille (Olga Kurylenko), who leads him to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless businessman and major force within the mysterious Quantum organization. When Bond uncovers a conspiracy to take control of one of the world's most important natural resources, he must navigate a minefield of treachery, deception and murder to neutralize Greene before it's too late!

A good film ruined by appalling direction - maebers

This film could have been so good, but Marc Forster's clichéd and ham-fisted direction completely ruined it for me. To be fair, his handling of the quieter moments between the action was adequate, but he clearly has no grasp of how direct action sequences, which are clearly central to any good Bond. I'm afraid the 'shake the camera and cut at least once a second' school of action direction doesn't really cut it.

A disappointment - thenewguy

Quantum of Solace picks up where Casino Royale left off. This new Bond film returns with the same caste and follows the same story line and, with the promise of getting to watch Bond do something other than play poker, I was hopeful this movie would really kick the reboot up a notch.

the basic plot is that MI6 has been penetrated by a double-agent working for a secret organisation. Bond is apparently the only agent in MI6 and is put on the case. Unfortunately, every lead Bond turns up either escapes or dies, usually at Bond's hand, leaving MI6 to wonder if Bond is ridding the world of bad guys or if he's also a double agent who is destroying all their leads.

With a good cast and good plot, the movie was set up to be full of action and suspense, but both fall flat. There is no suspense in this movie. There's no civil chat with the bay guy, there's no seduction scene. The brief conversations between Bond and M are devoid of any tension or verbal wit.

the film is almost entirely chase scenes (there are three in the first 30 minutes) in various environments. We have a car chase, an on-foot chase, an airplane chase and a boat chase. And, like the brief fight scenes in Solace, they're all beautifully choreographed, but terribly edited. This is one of those action films which replaces real action with constant camera movement and rapid angel changes. We never really get to see any action, because the camera is always moving, always snapping to something else.

This film had the potential to be a really great Bond flick and ended up being mostly poor editing and characters blandly spouting one-liners. The final fight scene may be the only exception, but it wasn't able to make up for the rest of the movie.

A Disappointing Sequel - MovieProf

"Quantum of Solace" is not among the best of the Bond films. It's disappointing that it follows on the heels of perhaps one of the best in the series, "Casino Royale." For me, the reasons why "Solace" fail are the following:

1. Marc Forster as director. Although Forster has directed some great films--"The Kite Runner" and "Finding Neverland" principally--he seems out of his element here. His decision to use split-second edits during the action scenes is a terrible choice. The action is extremely difficult to make out at times. Characters are constantly cut in half motion, and the human eye simply can't follow clearly enough what is happening. At other times when the pace is slower, the editing is also slowed, and is much easier on the eyes.

2. Title song. Alicia Keyes and Jack White team up for one of the more forgettable theme songs in the series.

3. Story. When I saw Paul Haggis' name in the credits attached to the story, my expectations rose. I applaud the attempts to take Bond to new countries--Bolivia and Haiti--but very little else works here. The story, much like the editing, is far too quickly-paced for the average human to fully comprehend. My favourite sequence is when Bond debriefs back in London with M and others, early on in the film. The computer images the one man is presenting to both the others in the room and to us are moving so quickly, I eventually had to give up. Even the dialogue--in the same language I speak--is too quick.

ULtimately, "Quantum" needs to be longer than its 106 minutes allows. Usually we think a movie is too long. In this case, we need more time to catch up here. Ironic for sure, but true.
