the ending - ptittle

The ending of this movie has stuck with me. I was going through my rental history looking for movies I wanted to review (honestly, to get the reward points), and truth to be told, there were a few I didn't even remember watching. At all. Not so with this one. It is a microcosmic view of our resentment of achievement, of everything that is wrong with our world, of why we're not going to survive. What we do to our genius (hell, even to our reasonably intelligent!). We deserve to become extinct!

This one is mostly frustrating because I think there's a better movie about this topic bursting to get out of the limitations of this screenplay, which treats the shooter as a bit of a cypher and makes the professor too much of a stage villain for this to feel like a sincere treatment of the very real problem of intellectual suppression in the academy. This is a slight, less than 90 minute, treatment of a topic that would have been much richer with more deeply realized characters. As it is, the Phd supervisor is simply a jerk, the student a bit vacant to have produced the groundbreaking work he is supposed to have produced, and Meryl Streep's portrayal of a fuzzy warm liberal with good intentions never really clearly situated within the film's vision. I'm not sure what the director wants us to think about any of this.

Subtlety to Perfection - napierslogs

"Dark Matter" is a fantastic movie. For those frustrated with academic politics or anybody who enjoys a simple movie told well, shot well and acted brilliantly, should see Dark Matter.

The writer/director got it right. (Not necessarily details surrounding previous incidents that this may be based on), but the overall attitude of the students, and professors at the university are portrayed perfectly.

The story follows a brilliant Chinese student at an American University trying to get his Ph.D. under a successful and respected professor (played by Aidan Quinn). They showed us everything we needed to know about the main character, including contrasts to his fellow Chinese students with very effective, subtle scenes.

For the subtlety, effectiveness, simplicity, and brilliance of everything in this movie, "Dark Matter" is one of the best recent films made.
