The Proposal

Sandra Bullock is at her funniest in the fresh, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy The Proposal. On the verge of being deported and losing the high-powered job she lives for, the controlling Margaret announces she's engaged to her unsuspecting, put-upon assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds). After proposing a few demands of his own, the mismatched couple heads to Alaska where they have four short days to convince his quirky family and a very skeptical immigration agent that their charade is real. Featuring a star-studded supporting cast, including Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson and the delightfully inappropriate Betty White, this madcap comedy will have you saying "yes" to The Proposal again and again.

Didn't Like It At All - Hobgoblin

Both my wife and I hated this film. It had potential in the first 15 minutes and then flopped. A lot of the comedy was over the top zanny stuff. If you like that kind of thing it might be your cup of tea. But then even the romance didn't even make sense either.

Acting wasn't bad, it was really a script and directorial problem. Romantic comedies are tricky to get this balance of a romance that you can connect with while providing a few laughs. This movie did neither.

There was one scene with Betty White playing a West Coast Native which in my opinion was demeaning to Native culture. I found it offensive.

There was another scene with a male stripper that was just plain pathetic. I laughed because it was so pathetic and really found myself laughing at the stupidness of the movie itself not the gags themselves.

I recommend skipping this one and go for something like Bridget Jones Diary if you haven't seen it.

The Proposal is one of those films a reviewer drags their feet to attend expecting to detest it immensely as trite, formulaic, and tiresome. So, gosh, what a surprise seeing it - lesson learned. Starring Sandra Bullock as Margaret Tate, a dragon-lady book editor in the Devil Wears Prada-mold and Ryan Reynolds as her much hackneyed executive assistant, Andrew Paxton. When the dragon-lady is faced with deportation due to a citizenship glitch, she browbeats Andrew in agreeing to marry her ... in Alaska. Toss in a Department of State bureaucrat bent on proving it's all a farce marriage; Andrew's parents, Grace (the always wonderful Mary Steenburgen) and Joe (Craig T. Nelson) and Andrew's free-wheeling grandmother, Annie (Betty White) and you have a pretty wonky, and hilarious, two hours of nuptial zaniness. Directed, perfectly, by Anne Fletcher and with a nod to Pete Chairelli's great writing, The Proposal is worth a walk down the aisle.

The Proposal - djfunkybob

This is an average romantic comedy with a promising concept and many opportunities to relish Bullock’s comedy. I believe your enjoyment will depend on how deeply convinced you are of the spark between flunky Andrew (played by Reynolds) and his cutthroat boss, Margaret (played by Bullock). I never bought in and consequently thought the jokes fell flat. The severity of the punishment resulting from using engagement to avoid deportation added to my disbelief in Andrew’s reaction to the proposal. A later subplot on the importance of family brought some needed emotion to the story as Margaret became closer to Andrew’s Mom and Grandma. White portrayed the Grandma and switched back and forth between side-splitting hilarious and sadly embarrassing. Tune in to the credits for some laughs as many characters are grilled with questions from the film’s eager immigration officer.
