Good Hair

Director Jeff Stilson follows Chris Rock on this raucous adventure prompted by Rock's daughter approaching him and asking, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" An expose of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits beauty salons and hairstyling battles, scientific laboratories and Indian temples to explore the way hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of the black community.

Rock added the comedic factor to this that made it what it was. It was informative and entertaining at the same time. I had no idea that 'good hair' was that hard to come by.

Chris Rock is worried about the future of his infant daughters, namely their hair care. He should have cause for concern, considering black parents are already putting relaxer in their children's hair by the time they are 3 in order to straighten it out but at that age. All because the media and society expects a certain image.

Though sometimes hinting at deeper themes, this doc never takes itself too seriously (and extreme seriousness isn't what a viewer would expect from Chris Rock).

Chris Rock approaches this subject not as a comedian, but as a father who wants his daughters to feel beautiful in their own skin, and, in this case, hair.

Why do black women spend so much time, effort, and money, to have essentially "white" looking hair? Hair that they can't get wet, and no one can touch? He poses this question, and uncovers a whole cultural mindset that equates "good hair" with success and beauty.

Sometimes he veers off track (was there really any point in revealing that very few black hair product companies are owned by black people?), but overall this is informative and fun.

I was surprised to learn that there is this symbiotic relationship between India and L.A. (weave capital of the world), wherein Indian woman (ironically) shave their heads willingly to prove their lack of vanity to their God, and their church's sell that hair given to them for free for huge profits to American hair salons.

I thought Indian woman were making good money selling their hair. Turns out, they don't get a penny, and don't want one.

I also enjoyed following the hairdressing "battle royale" throughout the doc. It was like some sort of bizarre child's beauty pageant for grown ups.

All in all, a good doc about good hair.

I wasn't sure what I would think of this movie, but after starting it, I was immediately hooked. Chris Rock is a good host, mixing humour and the Chris Rock attitude with pertinent questions that reveal a lot of relatively unknown facts about the Black Hair industry.

I found myself looking at Black women's hair and wondering how much money they spent and what type of products they used, when I hadn't even thought about it before watching this movie.

Edutainment at its best!
