A good romantic country story, superb performances but..., - SuperBamBam

If Crazy Heart were just about the country music and Blake’s coming to terms with his own mortality — both as a man and a performer, it could quite possibly be a perfect film. However, the entire film is entangled with a romantic plot that’s like some sort of super advanced parasitic virus. It’s killing the entire movie, but it’s absolutely the only other thing the film’s got keeping it alive. While playing a show in Santa Fe, Blake agrees to an interview from local reporter Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Inexplicably but expectedly, they end up together, because that’s what it says in the script. And while I can understand and appreciate the parallels between Blake’s old life and the mistakes he made and him trying to atone for the sins of the past, it’s the weakest and most contrived part of the story

Crazy Heart is the country music version of The Wrestler: a grizzled veteran whose days in the spotlight are behind him struggles to keep going while seeing the world through a haze of regret and booze. The story is unremarkable; the alcoholic coming to terms with an addiction and striving to overcome it has provided the framework for everything from compelling cinema to maudlin made-for-TV movies. What elevates Crazy Heart is the remarkable performance of Jeff Bridges. Bridges fully inhabits this character as he transforms himself into a Kris Kristofferson-like figure--wry and sardonic with a charming twinkle in his eye even as he's wondering where he'll get his next drink. Besides the excellent acting and the strong song score, the film's script is a somewhat simplistic (and familiar) story about a man on the verge of oblivion who begrudgingly discovers a reason to live. But it's still a great story that has resonance as it encourages us to look into our own lives as well. Writer-director Cooper keeps things simple and unaffected, never shying away from the quietly telling moment and vividly capturing the geography (both physical and emotional) of the American Southwest. And most importantly, he's given Bridges a role that has weigh down his mantelpiece with awards.

Very enjoyable, well-written, well-acted movie and refreshingly devoid of special effects. Jeff Bridges is good as usual, but Maggie Gyllenhaal is real heart and soul of this movie. Another performance where the actor (MG)is submerged in the character. The country rock songs were suprisingly enjoyable and captured the bar band feel. The only weak link in the movie is the questionable casting of Colin Farrell as an American country music star. While he puts in a performance that is not so terrible, he leaves you on edge listening for the Irish brogue to lilt in and out of his lines.
