He's having a mid term crisis.

Charlie Thurber (Luke Wilson, Idiocracy) is a beleaguered English professor at fictitious Grey College who competes for tenure against an impressive new hire from Yale, Elaine Grasso (Gretchen Mol, 3:10 to Yuma). Jay Hadley (David Koechner, Thank You For Smoking) is an anthropology professor at Grey who tries to convince Thurber to sabotage Grasso’s career - while being simultaneously obsessed with trying to prove the authenticity of Bigfoot.

Meh! - xsnrg

All I can say about this movie is that I was not overly impressed. While not an all out horrible movie, it just didn't appeal to me. It's the story of a teacher trying to make tenure who ends up competing with a woman from Harvard. As you already have guessed, they fall in love and yadda yadda yadda the movie ends. I would not reccommend this movie, especially with a million other choices out there.

Didn't think... - Dakos

this was too bad but can see why it was a straight to DVD movie. Luke Wilson plays these roles very well. Not sure what to make of Gretchen Mol as the new professor that came in from Yale. David Koechner is is great as the best friend/comic relief in constant search of Bigfoot. Might not be for everyone but well written.

Flawed but worth a watch - JAZA

You never should have very high expectations for a straight-to-DVD release, unless from an indie director who hand-picked passionate performers and went the festivals route. You might find a little gem that you’d like to keep around on your shelf to wash away some turgid Gerard Butler rom-com or other.

I thought Luke Wilson had washed out since he hasn’t been in a major release for a long time –save for an awesome cameo in the equally awesome 3:10 to Yuma. But seeing him chew his scenery in this one indicates the dude simply wanted to keep to the kind of smaller and more heartfelt projects that made him in the first place, like Bottle Rocket.

The rest of the cast fits equally just as well. The great Bob Gunton is easily given here his best role since Greg The Bunny, Gretchen Moll’s gorgeous smile is a welcome sight, and Sasha Alexander again begs the question why she’s never given bigger parts. Only stumbling block is David Koechner, who’s made such a career at portraying annoying dimwits that he just ruins it for me – he rubs me the wrong way!

Short coming for this one might be the comedy itself; setting and scope promise a different look at college, at the choices offered and made as one’s thirties start weighing. But instead it’s mostly about a poor shmoe trying to save his career and salvage his life while everybody else either help badly or not at all.
Ill-fated comedy aside. We’re treated to a slice of life in a microcosm of a small town that recalls Nobody’s Fool. Many pit falls are side-stepped to avoid veering into insidious rom-com territory and even some of the annoyances come off as sweet. Especially the end twist, which honestly I should’ve seen coming but didn’t.

A very-small budgeted movie intended for shelves, but as shuch fares much better than most. The kind of film to keep close by on a shelf to be re-watched whenever the mood feels right. And in any case, a good first effort by director Mike Million.
