The Ghost Writer

When a gifted ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is hired to write the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), he quickly finds himself trapped in a web of political and sexual intrigue. Lang is implicated in a scandal over his administration's harsh tactics, and as the ghostwriter digs into the politician's past, he discovers secrets that threaten to jeopardize international relations forever. Co-starring Olivia Williams and Kim Cattrall, it's a taut and shocking thriller from acclaimed director Roman Polanski (The Pianist).

Extra Star for the Valiant Effort - KevinJaques

The author, Harris, wanted to conform to rules of Hitchcockian thrillers. His goal was for an everyman to keep making logical reactions until the situation became fantastic. He must have hit the ‘everyman’ point too hard, because Ewan McGregor played the character like a fussy and spoiled pussy, excepting the central relationship, where he behaved inexplicably.

Pierce Brosnan did an excellent job and I am not one of his fans. This might be his perfect role. However, he was not, as expected, the central relationship.

I’m afraid I saw the ending coming a mile away. To a degree, that was due to clues and foreshadowing, which is to the credit of the author. But a large part was due to ‘Hollywood Logic’ where the answer is revealed by casting decisions and by rejecting obvious red herrings. In other words, it was predictably conventional.

But you know what, I sat up close to my giant tv and watched it in BluRay. The crisp and authentic detail of the set design was sufficient to take it over the top and keep it enjoyable to watch.

I will have to give it credit for working hard to be a quality and intelligent movie. It failed to have much impact or much creativity, and I didn’t identify with or like or believe the protagonist’s character. So, it’s a 3 in the result and a 4 in the effort.

Predictable - valdezzz

This movie does have an irksome predictability about it, leading to a disappointing finale of pursuit similar to a thousand other movies. This film hasn’t developed the desired ability to massage the ideal amount of complication out of the screenplay, and while passably engaging and even semi-poignant, it just doesn’t contain the urgency to sufficiently rouse the senses.

Frustrating - seenit

I love Ewan McGregor, and he did a fine job in this movie. the pacing is a bit slow, but I don't mind that, as I often find there is too much focus on action now in movies and not much plot. However, the plot itself is not that gripping, and the ending is incongruous withe the character's actions up to that point - it feels like a 1950's B movie ending. I would skip this and find something more substantial.
