Very good movie - Treyab73

Watched the movie after reading the book. As always the book is better. I was looking forward to seeing Minnie brought to life and she was really good in the movie, but her character in the book was better. It is a good movie as a movie. Nothing historical here as it doesn't go into the reality of the violence in Mississippi at the time. So I'd call it primarily a character based movie which is fine because the characters are very well done and the story is a good one.
BUT, read the book ;-)

The Help - djfunkybob

This superlative adaptation of the best-selling novel explores discrimination 1960’s Mississippi – a time and place 100 years removed from abolishment on the calendar, but not in the minds of many white employers of maids. The story is unique since it is told from the perspective of a young white woman disgusted with the discrimination she witnesses and from a black maid willing to candidly share her story. The film can be categorized as both emotional and inspirational. The story is about mothers and daughters, believing in yourself, and having courage in the face of adversity. The ensemble cast was terrific and I was not surprised they garnered so many Oscar nominations. Spencer was perfectly suited for the role of Minny and delivered a career-best performance that will undoubtedly be difficult to repeat. Chastain was also brilliant as Celia ? a woman as clueless in the kitchen and she is about how young Mississippi housewives treat their maids. Finally, if you thought Twilight’s Victoria was evil, Howard out does herself portraying a disreputable bigot owed her just desserts.

Wonderful actors and actresses. The person who stood out for me wasn't Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer or Jessica Chastain, but it was the delightful Bryce Dallas Howard. She completely disappeared into her role and I genuinely felt hate for her character. Why wasn't nominated for an Oscar is beyond me. However, Viola, Octavia and Jessica deserved their nominations and wins. Just goes to show you how good this movie was.
