I love this film! It is so fun! If you don't like Tarantino, then you probably won't like this film. But if you are looking for something with lots of fun, action, cool fight scenes, blood and gore, than you need to see this! I love Tarantino's style of directing, it is really unique and raw. This is one of my favourite movies. Totally worth the rent! The Bride Unleashed! - Toubrouk
Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino came out with an amazing piece with the title Kill Bill: Volume 1.
This movie who is half-way between a 70' revenge film, a Samurai anime and Rambo on meth. It is a a stylized collage of blazing action held together by an impressive flow of hemoglobin.
The casting is excellent. Uma Thurman made an excellent bride while Lucy Liu as a Yakuza crime boss/Assassin is just delectable. The rest of the staff is perfectly picked to fulfill their respective role without any fault.
Mr. Tarantino created a gem with this movie; a feminine heroine who use (and abuse) violence without any silly excuse. Lines like "But I feel bad about it", "I was abused as a child" or "Why are you forcing me of doing this?" don't appear here. The main character (The Bride) offers no excuse for her actions except vengeance. This is quite refreshing. If there was any excuse given, the whole movie would had collapsed into a second-class action movie with a dull, "Feel-Good", soporific finish.
An excellent rental.
The volume 2 is in the mail right now and I am avidly waiting for it.BANG - Angora
I like to view both parts of Kill Bill as one long movie with an intermission.
The first volume is the more visceral. It makes an impact with a long string of loud, bloody, sudden acts of violence that invite us into the world the protagonist inhabits. The signals for safety and danger constantly get crossed; we must be vigilant. Trust no one. Be ready for any seemingly innocent situation to erupt into a terrifying melee.
Kill Bill has taken a lot of flack as being misogynist. I understand the arguments being made there, but I tend to disagree. The women in the film are presented as being different from each other, and equal to their male counterparts. If you look at the way Uma Thurman’s body is presented, especially, she’s always shown as being strong, solid, capable, and enduring. That’s a rarity for women in film, and it’s nice to see.
The first volume would not stand by itself; it’s half of a story, that needs to be supported by the more philosophical conclusion. However, as the opening act in a two-act structure, it serves as an effective way to engage the audience on an emotional and instinctual level. The film is also very technically impressive, with excellent editing and several very difficult and creative shots. Tarantino also strikes the right balance between referencing the extensive body of film tradition he’s drawing on, and creating a story that works for viewers (like me) who aren’t as familiar with those traditions.
All said, Volume One is very well made, and the excessive levels of violence make more sense when taken in context with Volume Two. Worth seeing, but only if you intend to view the second half as well.
