I, Robot
Set in a future Earth (2035 A.D.) where robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners, this is the story of "robotophobic" Chicago Police Detective John Spooner's (Smith) investigation into the murder of Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), who works at U.S. Robotics, in which a robot, Sonny (Tudyk), appears to be implicated, even though that would mean the robot had violated the Three Laws of Robotics, which is apparently impossible. It seems impossible because.. if robots can break those laws, there's nothing to stop them from taking over the world, as humans have grown to become completely dependent upon their robots. Or maybe... they already have? Aiding Spooner in his investigation is a psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin (Moynahan), who specializes in the psyches of robots.

I really wanted to like this movie...but I did not. In fact, I fell asleep a third of the way through. Too much exposition from the characters, and too dark and pessimistic for me to enjoy from a movie that I hoped to be more of a fun animated flick. I kind of wish I picked something else to enjoy on a sunny weekend... Will Smith, I trusted you for better family movies than this! :(Something that makes you go "Hmm..." - Wynchr
We'd been meaning to watch this movie for ages so it was a nice surprise to have it Zipped to us. The movie is action-packed enough to keep it entertaining and the philosophical exploration is deep enough to leave you with deeper thoughts than a regular action flick would. Some things about it were cliche and the plot was easy to follow and even guess at, but if you didn't know anything about it to begin with, it made for a good movie night. While we enjoyed it a lot, we don't think we would watch it again but we were glad to watch it once! Hope this helps.A mix bag - icedevilz2
On the one hand, the use of the 'source' material is cringe worthy. While many elements from the story are superficially drawn from somewhere in the Robot universe, it is not an 'adaptation' of any one (or mix of) stories. In it's day, this film was bashed for being one of blatant product placement, but just over six years after its release, it seems pretty tame compared to a few recent films - other than the Converse bit at the beginning. Audi actually built mockups of the car especially for the film (like Lexus in Minority Report). If you don't care too much about the source material, you are left with a fairly generic sci-fi action movie with some really strange camera work. The plot has plenty of holes, the acting is nowhere near vintage Will Smith and stuff gets blow up pretty good at times. It's really fun to look at (it holds up well on blu-ray six years later) and listen to, and there are even a few chuckles to be had. But really there are better sci-fi films out there (even ones featuring Will Smith) and the main draw of this flick was supposedly the Asimov-ness, which really is pretty pedestrian in its implementation. This belongs firmly in the rental category.
