Some recent superhero movies, while undeniably excellent (think the two Christopher Nolan Batman movies), are not necessarily a lot of fun. Iron Man manages to balance real moviemaking ambition with the realization that a comic-book movie does not need to be gloomy and depressing to be effective. Robert Downey Jr. is great, as are Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, and the script pops. Highly recommended.Big silly fun - Superdave
The effects for this movie are ground-breaking. Unlike a lot of recent superhero movies where you can see what is CGI and what's not, the flying sequences, fighting action and explosions all integrate seamlessly and are completely convincing. Robert Downey Jr. is perfectly cast as a rather dissipated 40ish drunk and former whiz kid who still has talent and charisma enough to get by, but needs a purpose. [Art imitating life?] He gets it when he finds his weapons are being sold to both sides in the current Afghan conflict, and decides to intercede as Iron Man. Downey is his usual likable self and Gwyneth Paltrow plays his girl-Friday-but-not-love-interest secretary with understated style; their relationship is actually charming and credible, a rare thing in action movies. The movie itself strikes a deft balance between shoot-em-up and peacenik sensibilities as the hero strives for peace and justice through superior technology and firepower. This is also rare and welcome in the action movie genre, which tend to perpetuate Reagan-era right-through-might attitudes. Entertaining, smart and very watchable, this movie is highly recommended by me.Now this is how you make a superhero movie. - clauditorium
Now this is how you make a superhero movie. It's not an easy thing. You want to give viewers a dose of action, but you don't want it to overwhelm the story. You're showing viewers a fantasy, yet you want them to be invested. In that sense, Iron Man reminds me a lot of Batman Begins and (to a lesser extent) Unbreakable, especially in the way all three manage the trick of making the central character's transformation believable (as much as this is possible when it comes to superheroes). In this case, they couldn't have picked a better actor for the part than Robert Downey Jr. He brings the exact amounts of wit and gravitas the role of Tony Stark requires.
It's also very tricky to have a character redeem himself without becoming a bore (good luck, Hancock), something else Iron Man manages to accomplish. Like many Hollywood blockbusters, this one seems to have been written by committee (four screenwriters are credited), but the produced script is much smarter than average. The story unspools smoothly, and held me from beginning to end.
