Treading lightly in honor of Heath Ledger - movie_goer
"Just couldn't get into more than 45 minutes of the film... due to unforseen events (Heath's untimely death) the investors and Gilliam scrambled to keep the film alive and everyone pleased."
Fans of this film will probably say that it was highly imaginative and visually stimulating ... at least that's what I think Terry Gilliam is going for. I am not a fan of this film.
This seems like a rather old fashioned morality tale, a re-telling of Faust: immortality and deals with the devil usually come back to bite you in the ass. The added element is the "Imaginarium," a mirror into which people fall, and it takes them to another world where the person's imagination can run wild until s/he is forced to make a choice between the benevolent Dr. Parnassus and the devil. All Imagination - ABC99
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a visually beautiful, especially on Bluray. However, it isn't engaging at all and although beautiful is really boring. Part of the problem is, that unforunatly Heath Ledger could not play his full role, leaving an awkward tacked on plot device of him changing identities through the film. The audeince is aware that this was necessary, but it does interfere with the flow of the story.
It is a pretty picture....but not much elserambling incoherent collage - beernpeanuts
The movie stays true to the director's style, however the actual plot, storyline, character development, and progression are not easily defined. Hollywood's sellable personalities cannot save this movie as the sequencing of events seems haphazard. In essence, the movie drifts aimlessly from vignette to vignette, with occasional visual wizardry compensating for the lack of plot.
My mind drifted five minutes into the movie - this is a bad sign, as any flick needs to grab, hold, and engross its audience. The only redeeming quality is the name of the movie - it sounded grand, perhaps promising an escapist hour and a half. Alas - I was disappointed. Pity.
