Ignore all contrary reviewers. This was a great movie. The action was fantastic, the acting great, the special effects amazing and the storyline perfect. The only thing better was the beautiful woman who played Io. If you're a big fan of Greek mythology, you will definitely NOT enjoy this movie. The directors and producers took too many liberties with different aspects of the myths and mashed it all together to try to make a movie with a plot. The characters were all incredibly superficial and you couldn't sympathize or empathize with any of them enough to really care about whether they lived or died.
If you're just going for special effects, feel free to watch this movie. Otherwise it was incredibly disappointing and lacklustre.Almost a Titan-ic Disaster - MovieProf
After 29 years, I eagerly anticipated a remake of the 1981 “Clash of the Titans,” starring Harry Hamlin, Laurence Olivier, and others. This remake has its own star power, including Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes, and enhanced special effects, but in the end, it just isn’t as good.
When I first saw this film in the theatre, I was furious: the gods’ costumes were ridiculous, the plot was far removed from the original, and the action scenes were far too quick-paced to visibly see. Upon watching it again on DVD, I have cooled my perception a bit, and now give the film a passing rating, but the same problems are still there.
First off, the Greeks look impressive enough, but Worthington is completely out of place: he is clean shaven with neatly clipped hair amongst a horde of dirty-looking men. I now see the reasoning for this: he is a demi-god, and needs to stand out. Got it. But, wait: the gods don’t look the way he does—they have long hair and ridiculous costumes. Fiennes is the most outrageous of the bunch, with his long hair and withered voice, and Neeson shines like a reflective mirror.
As well, the plot has been changed dramatically from the original: Andromeda is no longer Perseus’ love interest; there are no riddles from Calibos; Perseus is adopted by another family; Calibos is now Perseus’ father. And so on. None of these changes make the story any better.
The special effects are the one area where serious improvement has been made: the ’81 employed visual effects extraordinaire Ray Harryhausen, but these effects looked dates almost immediately; the new digital effects of the remake are far stronger.
All in all, this remake does little to enhance the original. Though the ’81 version looks pretty cheesy by today’s standards, is a superior film story-wise.
