In 2nd-Century Britain, celebrated Roman soldier Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) embarks on a dangerous quest to restore the tarnished reputation of his father and find the golden emblem that disappeared with him and thousands of troops twenty years earlier. But the highlands of Caledonia are a savage wilderness, and Marcus must rely on his embittered slave, Esca (Jamie Bell), to navigate the perilous region. Their journey pushes them beyond the boundaries of loyalty and betrayal, friendship and hatred, deceit and heroism. Donald Sutherland co-stars in this gripping, gritty, action-packed adventure from acclaimed director Kevin Macdonald.

Soared Like an Eagle...with a bit of a head cold - Mookie
Overall, I liked this movie. A solid adventure film with great attention to character and motivation that takes time setting up the key journey part of the story with a good payoff at the end (which you have to take with a grain or two of salt). They actually were going to end it with less of a Hollywood ending but I prefer the one they went with since I think I would have been disappointed with the one they originally chose (but that's just me). Yes Channing Tatum is a wooden actor who somehow keeps getting cast as leads but I think his "style" of minimum expression worked in this case. Jamie Bell was amazing as his slave. The landscapes are beautiful and I appreciated how the director didn't Hollywood up the settings - e.g. the fighting arena was size appropriate for a small outpost. What I can find fault with is how convenient things were on the quest and how the main character is on death's door one minute and then spared the next (happens twice in the film). And also the actual quest wasn't terribly exciting. But as I said, I did enjoy it more than some other reviewers did. Maybe low expectations helped :).Eye opener - mxg123
OK...I know most people may not like this movie for all kinds of reasons, but for me it was an eye opener. I have always been an history lover, and this movie fed some of that thirst. Although I do not know how historically accurate it was, all I know is that Hadrian's wall does exist in Scotland, and it was built by the Romans in the second century. I also enjoy the chemistry between the main characters in their own personal quest to make some wrong better. The Eagle was not the only thing lost - terbo
After the first few scenes, I was prepared to overlook what seemed horrible miscasting and settled in to try and like this film. Good representation of a working Roman army; quite atmospheric in the worship of Mithras; interesting opening battle scene. Unfortunately, the sharp detail and atmosphere was lost as soon as Hadrian's Wall was left behind. An egregious lapse in continuity allowed our intrepid heroes, after only one night, to magically change their horses from an unexceptional bay and brown to a purebred black Friesian and an outstanding grey. Considering that rough native ponies would probably have been a luxury where they were going, this strange transformation was all the more startling. After that I rapidly lost interest and was ready to pick holes in everything. Too bad, when I seriously wanted to like this film.
