The ship has sailed in the fourth installment of a franchise with very little new to offer. Marshall was directing the action scenes as if this was The Pirates of Penzance which isn't surprising considering his prior work with musicals. The action sequences were choreographed dance numbers with swords clanging at every step. For more reasons than the obvious, I enjoyed the mermaid subplot and how the creatures would lure their victims. The story was simple, in general, and most of the other subplots didn’t interest me in the least. An overly complicated plot and poorly thought-out characters detract from the flashes of charm - moviemonger
An overly complicated plot and poorly thought-out characters detract from the flashes of charm that Cap’n Jack still emits. Despite quality set-pieces and the best efforts of the cast, this is dull and crossbones. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" stands on its own as new film outside the first franchise trilogy. In fact, you won't need to watch the first three films to understand the movie. Most importantly, this has the classic "Pirates of the Caribbean" formula we have all come to love - a fast-paced, non-stop action fantasy film with the quirky antics of a Captain Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp still does a flawless Jack Sparrow and everyone else did their part in the acting department. What "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" fails to do though is to present a cohesive and compelling plot. The film definitely feels like a mish-mash of ideas forced to work together. There were also a lot of key scenes that were predictable and cliche`. We also recommend avoiding the 3D version of the film as it was all muddy and dark most of the time. It was a terrible idea from the get-go as all previous films in the franchise have a dark undertone. In the end, even with all its flaws, we still recommend watching "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides". It was a thrilling ride from start to finish just don't expect it to be as deep or as epic as the first three films. ON STRANGER TIDES doesn’t really have any definitive conclusion to it and leaves things wide open for the fifth installment.Fun Film - kav2001c
Odd feel for this one. For those who don't know, this script is not an actual "Pirates of the Caribbean" story, they liked it and rewrote it to feature the characters we know and love. On positive side it makes story feel very different, on negative there are some obvious parts that are pushed in.
Overall the film is lots of fun, and more of the same. Jack Sparrow is back and that really is all any of the fans care about.
