Captain America: The First Avenger - djfunkybob
This Avenger franchise superhero flick sets itself apart somewhat from its contemporaries because it is set in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. I was only bothered when it wasn't clearly explained how Capt. America wound up in present day without aging. Weaving was well cast as the evil Nazi nemesis, Red Skull. I also can see what Evans was cast as Capt. America – he fit very well into the hero’s clean-cut, determining and honourable persona. The fact that Capt. America may have superior abilities, but remains mortal without super powers, adds an intensifying dynamic to the action scenes. I found the army weapons research backstory to be much more interesting than a weak attempt at a love story.Excellent! - Karl
I must say, I am more and more impressed with the Marvel movie adaptations of their comic books. High qulaity effect, compelling story telling, great acting...what more can you ask for? I didn't know much about this particular character, not being a big Captain America fan, but I was more than pleasantly surprised at how well this movie was done. Chris Evans was the perfect casting choice. My one quibble was probably the over-the-top rah rah America crap, but it's a small one. Definately see this before checking out the Avengers this year. Can't wait to see that one either. Oh, and scroll through the credits...there's a small addendum at the very end of the credits setting up the Avenger's movie. Loved it! 4 out 5 stars.Oh Captain my Captain! - PeterParker
I saw this in theatre knowing that "Cap" would be a big part of the upcoming Avengers movie. Captain America is one of many Captains (Captain Marvel, Canada, Britain, Planet,...) and most likely the original.
As to the story...scrawny kid wants to fight for the good guys but just isn't useful to the army. Scientist sees a smart kid with his heart in the right place and sets him up as a test subject for his Super Soldier Serum. The little guy now has all the brawn he needs.
A pretty good origin story that gives us all the background we'll need for future movies. I was worried about the level of flag-waving that this movie would force me to endure but it was fine and dealt with comically for the most part.
Enjoy
