Super 8
J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg join forces in this extraordinary tale of youth, mystery, and adventure. Super 8 tells the story of six friends who witness a train wreck while making a Super 8 movie, only to learn that something unimaginable escaped during the crash. They soon discover that the only thing more mysterious than what it is, is what it wants. Experience the film that critics rave is, "filled with unstoppable imagination and visual effects to spare. It will put a spell on you." (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone)

Great special effects and build-up but about half way through, the kiddie side takes over leading to quite predictable outcomes, cumulating into a corny ending.
The acting was decent to good, with a "great" for the performance by Elle Fanning. Overall the kids' acting was pretty good.
It's Spielberg, so it's a family oriented movie (kids under 12 might have some frightening moments), but us adults will have to keep that in mind at times. To offset that, it is a great trip back to childhood in the 70's.
Some vastly over-the-top events though. Let's be honest; when a pick-up truck hits a freight train, head on, the truck is destroyed and the train generally suffers only minor damage. Not in this film. Get ready for air-born freight cars that get launched like rockets! It's fantastic to watch though. Oh, but it doesn't stop there... the little rural train depot is completely annihalated during the crash, but, thankfully, all the kids survive, and without injury, by just running around aimlessly. Then they drive off in the car they came in which apparently didn't even lose a window despite being parked only 20' away from the track. It's stuff like that... so Hollywood.
Lower the expectations a bit and it is really quite entertaining.
There are some touching story elements that help with the character development and make the film more than just an action movie. 3.5 stars.Super 8 - Jude
This was a very enjoyable movie. I am not a Science Fiction fan. However the story did not dwell on the fantasy too much. Instead it was a lovely store of a family and friends and growing up. Great acting by everyone, great pacing with no weak links, and the special effects were just fine. Not a block buster, but a good watch.Super - RV_BOLO
Great movie, great (teen) actors, and a real step back in time. A lot of thought and creativity went in to this movie and it shows. A bit too scary for all members of the family but teens and adults will enjoy. Just a touch of ET and a touch of B horror/sci-fi.
