Horatio Hornblower: The New Adventures
Emmy Award-Winning Series!
The ultimate high-seas hero, Horatio Hornblower is a man of unshakable courage, high principles, and matchless skill. Now, C.S. Forester's beloved mariner returns to the screen with two new films.
Loyalty finds Horatio marooned in peacetime Portsmouth, living off his superb card playing skills. But with the winds of war stirring, Hornblower is given command of the sloop Hotspur. Duty sees Horatio jumping into wedded bliss, and then returning to his command to face a French fleet that is preparing for invasion - aided by an old nemesis.
Swashbuckling action, broadside battles, and below-decks intrigue set the Emmy-winning Hornblower saga apart from other historical dramas. Ion Gruffudd (Black Hawk Down, Titanic) gives a star-making performance as the dashing hero, and the stellar supporting cast includes Robert Lindsay (Me & My Girl), Jamie Bamber (Band of Brothers), and Paul Copley (Queer as Folk).

This is a fairly standard action adventure movie set in the time of Nepolian Bonepart. There are your expected twists of betrayel, trust and revenge. The visuals aren't anything spectacular, most of the explosions look like cgi. The sword fighting isn't very good either. The storytelling is the where this film excels.Horrible travesty of the novels - fung0
These versions of Hornblower are an insult to the name. They throw away absolutely everything about the original character, and substitute only bone-headed random plot twists. It's like watching a hero NAMED "Sherlock Holmes," who solves mysteries not by deduction and cleverness but by bare knuckles and miraculous luck.
Even for those unfamiliar with the books, this series is an insult. There's no semblance of historical accuracy, and the abysmal casting of Ioan Gruffud. Bereft of their greatest strengths, these tales founder in a sea of illogic.
Avoid, avoid, avoid.Relatively faithful to the novels - Ralston_McTodd
Allowing for some changes necessitated by the constraints of TV (more screen time for Robert Lindsay, for example)these episodes will be enjoyed by Forester's fans. There's more visible emotion in Hornblower because we see him rather than read about him, but the show has taken pains to remain faithful to the stories. The acting and production values are a delight and even if you are new to Hornblower, you'll enjoy the maritime adventures and crises of conscience. Watch Season 1 first, though.
