Hairspray
It’s 1962—the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion—to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Welcome to the '60s!

On almost every level, Hairspray surpasses expectations and is probably one of the best studio musicals to come out in years. The young and old cast division creates a colourful world of people and ideals. It's an abstraction of an era made resonant, contemporary, and purely joyful. She Had Me When She Sang to The Rats - ZetaC
I saw this movie in the theatre with low expectations, knowing a bit about the genesis of the story - John Waters' quixotic story-telling and direction, Divine's cult-status performance as Edna Turnblad - and then its revival as a Broadway musical. It all seemed to me to point to a movie that had big shoes to fill and desperately differing genes to deal with.
Then Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad came on screen and had me in the palm of her hand when she sang lovingly about Baltimore to a group of rats on the street. Musicals seem to be a film art form that Hollyweird has relegated to the exclusive realm of the animated summer blockbuster, but some of us still hanker for a "story in song" that keeps its balance between naivety and soul. Hairspray walks that line with confidence and creativity.
I'll deal with the technical stuff quickly here - the cinematography, set decoration, sound, choreography and editing are all first rate - in that they do what they must well and seamlessly move the story forward. The soundtrack is - for those of us who love early rock 'n' roll, Motown, blues and R & B - an absolute gem.
But for me it's Blonsky who makes this film really shine. There are few modern examples of an actor who has the 'something special' to be able to reach the audience directly through the camera, but Blonsky has it in spades! Call it what you will, I say it is a refreshing lack of guile and cynicism. I believed Blonsky's naive sincerity and so I was given the key to the rest of the movie.
Travolta, Pfeiffer, Latifa and Walkin all bring huge credibility in their performances, too. Mostly, I believe by being cast against type in creative ways - although Peiffer seems to be enjoying a career renaissance playing beautiful villains. The rest of the young cast hold their own well, too. But I am convinced that it is Blonsky's fearless exuberance that makes much of, if not all, of this possible.
This one's coming home with me.Awesome!! - ktravis
This has got to be one of the cutest musicals for 2007. With a high-profile cast as this movie had, the execution was flawless! ...and cross-dressing Travolta really shone through in this new character that i'm sure even HE was surprised to take part in. You couldn't have asked for a better leading role than Allison Janney, but side-kicking Bynes could have used a bit more of a role other than being just that -- a side-kick. Bynes' script probably didn't fill more than half a page. I was a bit disappointed at that. But OH Walken and Travolta made such a CUTE couple, didn't they?! Michelle Pfeiffer really knew how to fill her role in a dictator-like independent racist... almost scarily convincing (a few more roles in THAT type of character just might taint her reputation). ...and you couldn't have asked for a better role for the character Motormouth Maybelle than Queen Latifah. On a final side-note, characters Seaweed and Link seemed to be quite tied to the similar roles of Sammy Davis Jr and Elvis Presley, respectively, don't you think?! All-in-all, the movie was awesome! ...Will I buy it.... probably not. But it HAS made me want to watch High School Musical now! If you enjoyed this movie, i would recommend renting Blow Dry, starring Alan Rickman, Rachel Leigh Cook and Josh Hartnett.
