Brokedown Palace
They were young, fearless, and friends forever.
Until a stranger came between them.
In this sexy, riveting thriller, Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale star as two best friends whose dream vacation becomes a nightmare. Alice (Danes) is impulsive and reckless; Darlene (Beckinsale) is more reserved. But when each falls for the same mysterious man, both girls throw caution to the wind, and in one instant, their lives are changed forever. Now in a foreign land, they must prove their innocence before it is too late. Bill Pullman co-stars in this "compelling" (People Magazine) tale of self discovery and the ultimate sacrafice for a friend!

A really long after school special - Brizent
Really? This movie is pretty boring. Kate Beckinsale acting is pretty unrealistic for the situation and Danes is just passable. If you want a good 'drug smuggling - capture - prison' movie watch; Midnight Express(1978)or Return to Paradise(1998). Save yourself an hour and forty minutes of your life and skip this movie. What Would You Do?? - 0930tracey
I asked myself this question throughout this movie. What would I do if I ended up in a Thailand prison with my best friend for 35 years, for something I didn't do?
These girls gave wonderful performances that made me forget I was watching a movie at all.
It's quite scary to think that these things do happen.
I highly recommend Brokedown Palace.Umm, no. - cathyottawa
Two girls fresh out of highschool go to Bangok and get taken advantage of by a handsome stranger - landing them in a Thai prison for 33 years to life.
I guess this wants to be a cautionary tale, but there is just so much wrong with this story.
First off, the descriptor says the man "stashed the drugs on them", but in fact, the movie never answers the question of whether he did, or one of the girls did it for the false promise of love and riches.
When the girls do get arrested, there is a glaring lack of urgency. I liked the early scenes, when they are first questioned, but once they get sent to prison, it's like "oh well, this sure does suck". I would expect to see them freaking out big time.
This same lack of concern shows up again with the father of Beckinsale's character. He should be freaking out. He should be calling every lawyer, politician, etc he can think of. Instead, he waits for this "yankee Hank" character to call him. And he doesn't want to help Danes's character at all, because she spilt paint on his couch as a kid? What the heck was that?
Hank starts out as a sleezy lawyer just interested in making a buck, only to become a crusader for these girls, with no proper character development to have that make sense.
I found it impossible to believe that this would happen to two young, pretty, white American girls, and no one would think to call the press about it. Hank only threatens it towards the end, but never does it.
Finally, the ending. Oh my goodness it's an over the top attempt to tug at the heart strings that I found ridiculous.
