Kama Sutra brings the legends to life as it follows the fortunes of Maya (Indira Varma) and Tara (Sarita Choudury) through a pivotal period of 16th century Indian history.
Tara is a princess, Maya her servant. Raised together as childhood friends and rivals, each in different ways uses the teachings of the Kama Sutra, the 4th century Indian treatise on love and sexuality, as a source of inspiration and enlightenment in a high-stakes romantic chess game.
When Maya finally achieves the equality with Tara she has always desired, the price that must be paid is mythic in its finality.

Epic tale from India's history - Steady
An epic tale set in 16th century India. Costumes are great and scenery is a scene stealer. Growing up together, Maya is Tara’s handmaiden. Tara catches the eye of the King and is betrothed to him. On their wedding night, Maya seduces the King and their friendship is challenged.
Maya goes on to become a trained courtesan and recaptures the King’s attention. But in the meantime falls for a sculpture who becomes her true love. But is not that easy to get away from the King and consequences will result. But her courtesan training lets Maya deal with it.A little to much going on - Special_K
Although the movie was set in the 16th century, I had a hard time figuring out what all was going on and who was who in the movie. I found the story a long dragged out plot and the ending was not what I was expecting when I read the review. Beautiful clothes, dances and beautiful places to see but the story line was a bit Blah. I would not watch this again nor would I suggest it to anyone.never fully develops - aisha_bee
this movie is beautiful in terms of colour, photography, music and people. but i think they tried to explore too many different topics with the plot, and it never goes deeply into any. the acting isn't superb, i think it is because most of these actors are british and they sounded weird faking an indian accent. also, there is a lot of unecessary nudity. with a drogadict king who is obsessed with his courtesan and won't pay attention to his wife, no wonder the kindom gets invaded! not that that seems to matter to much in the story...
