Knock-out: a splashy, volatile, crowd- pleasing rock-star melodrama - moviemonger
You don't have to be a Tina Turner fan to appreciate this movie, but, regardless of your opinion of her music, What's Love Got To Do With It cannot fail to impart an impression of her courage and inner strength. Although ultimately a triumphant story, this biography doesn't see its subject through rose-colored glasses. It takes chances, and that's why it works. Visually impressive with a dazzling soundtrack, What's Love Got To Do With It is a solid dramatic alternative to the bloated, overbudgeted summer action films. Punctuating the film's energized performances are several darkly violent scenes. These are frighteningly intense and graphic, not because they are especially bloody, but because the participants do exemplary jobs bringing volatile emotions to the surface. Often, abuse scenes are over-dramatized, but What's Love Got To Do With It avoids that trap -- this is a gut-wrenchingly realistic display.A Powerful Biopic - Radio_Jane
This was such a wonderfully done film. The story grabs you by the collar and holds you right through to the end. Basset is good, but it is Fishburne that really makes the film. Bear in mind that there are many adult scenes dealing with suicide, rape and drug use, so it isnt for the young onesRobbed - sarafina
How Bassett lost to Holly Hunter at the Oscars is a ridiculous oversight. A powerful yet vulnerable Tina is portrayed, at once both enigmatic and weak, tormented and rewarded. Fishburne is frightening and cool at the same time, catapulted to fame by his super-talented wife and sunk to rock bottom as a coke and spouse abuser. Bassett is winning as is the script. Gorgeous costumes and supporting cast. Bassett is amazing in all her performances, but this takes the cake. See it, tell your friends and enjoy the side of Tina you've never seen before.
