Picking Up the Pieces
Woody Allen plays a kosher butcher (wearing cowboy boots and a Stetson, no less) who slices and dices his philandering wife (Sharon Stone) but loses track of her hand -- which becomes venerated in a small-town church for its ability to work miracles. An all-star cast including David Schwimmer, Elliott Gould, Kiefer Sutherland and Maria Grazia Cucinotta provides plenty of laughs.

Thankfully this isn't a film that Woody directed. Thankfully, it's not even one he wrote. Unfortunately, writer/director Alfonso is a longtime companion of Woody, so you'd think he'd know how to write for one of the most notable filmmakers in cinema who happens to be his friend.
Without revealing plot or characters or concept, all I can simply say is... skip it. Don't waste your time or energy on this film. If you're looking for Woody brilliance (or even mediocrity - I'm looking at you Small Time Crooks), rewatch any of Woody's self-directed films.Woody I guess I can forgive you one bad film but did it have to be this bad? - tetedepierre
I am a devoted fan of Woody Allen. Imagine how bad this film must be if I could sit through it and not laugh once. And it is supposedly a way out comedy.
How funny is a dog that answers the phone and understands English? How funny is a priest that sleeps with a whore? How funny is Woody doing a sendup of his nervous almost stuttering Jewish character in a confessional where the priest is having sex? How funny is a man growing a four foot penis which he shows to all and sundry? How funny is a group of enraged people beating to death a jerk of a Texas trouper? How funny is it...but I repeat myself.
The answer is that all of this might be funny if properly handled. But alas, all involved must have been high on drugs. Have you ever been to a party where you, for whatever reason, could not drink while all around you everyone was drinking. And did you not notice that as the night progressed everyone thought that the jokes were getting better and better when in reality they were getting worse and worse. Well that''s this movie. It doesn't hang together and it gets worse and worse as it progresses.
All Woody Allen fans beware. Only see this if you want to confirm that even Geniuses can stumble. Stumble hell, fall on their faces is more like it.
